Worcester State Hospital
This hospital was on my list of hospitals I wanted to see. Whenever I drove home I always debated about skipping the normal exit I use on I-90 and keep on going to Worcester. Finally I kicked myself in the rear and after seeing Fairfield Hills State Hospital, I decided to drive up to Worcester. I was glad I did. If Danvers State Hospital, with its beautiful brick Gothic Kirkbride, is called "the castle on the kill," then Worcester State Hospital should've been called "the other castle on the hill." This hospital originally was built as a huge flag stone and brick Gothic Kirkbride insane asylum. In that form it operated for many years until it's closing. A couple years after it's closing, a fire broke out in the middle of the main building. After the fire had been put out, the town had been forced to tear down the middle section of the Kirkbride leaving only the left wing, the right wing, and the front portion of the old administration. Because this structure had been placed in the historic register, the town couldn't tear it down, so instead it left it standing to crumble in upon itself. While the building's age has begun to show in the outside, it still looks almost as grand as it did when it was originally constructed.
