Willard State Hospital
I remember back many months ago I had been talking to my mother about my hobby of Asylum History when she told me that way back in the 80's when she was training to be a nurse she had to spend some time training in a psychiatric hospital. I asked her which hospital she did her training at and she told that it was at Willard State Hospital. I thought that was cool and she told me some stories of her brief time there. Mom told me that whenever I wanted, we could go over to Willard State Hospital and she would show me around a bit. Later, when I was on vacation both of us found a day when we had nothing really to do. So I took her up on her offer and we drove out to Willard. The first thing that struck our eyes was that over half of the campus had been converted into a lock-down psychiatric facility. The other half looked to be rather disused with only two to four buildings still be used for other things. So we drove around campus while my mother tried to remember which building she had spent her time training at. Soon we figured it had to be the one overlooking the lake. All I can say is that Willard State Hospital has to be one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen!
