Walter E. Fernald State School
This place had been one that I had been meaning to visit for a long time. I had read about it in the disturbing book: "Christmas In Purgatory: A Photographic Essay on Mental Retardation." By Burton Blatt and Fred Kaplan. Plus I read the rather in depth look at this state school, "The State Boys Rebellion." By Michael D'Antonio. Both books gave a rather disturbing picture of what went on there during the earlier parts of the 20th century. Both books showed the harsh realities of the school in sharp description and black and white pictures. With all the history I decided to head over to the place and check it out, which turned into an interesting adventure outside of Fernald, however that's a story for another time!
