Fort Griswald
This earthen fort is located across the river from Fort Trumble in Groton CT. One day while I was walking around Fort Trumble, I looked across the river and saw this large obelisk sticking straight up from a tall hill. So one day I decided to drive through Groton and find that monument. What I found was Fort Griswald. It was a revolution era fort built to hold back the British. From what I could figure it held for a while before the British overwhelmed the fort. There in the courtyard between the earthen works, the commander of the fort handed his sword over to the British commander in surrender. Then a couple minutes later on the British commander killed the fort's American commander with the American's own sword. This fort is extremely beautiful with views of New London across the river and various other buildings located near by.
