Centralia
There a variety of oddities and mistakes laying about the United States. Some make for interesting sight seeing and Centralia is one of them. This once village stood within the coal region of Pennsylvania. Back in the fifties, they had an open pit to burn trash. What the villagers did not realized that there was an exposed vein of coal within that pit. So one day they were burning trash when the vein caught fire. They tried everything they could to try to put the fire out, but it soon went underground and is still burning today. Over ten years ago, people really started moving out of there when the ground started subsiding all around them. Finally the state removed Centralia from it's list of villages and disbanded the village's zip code. It was strange driving through there and seeing all sorts of abandoned streets, plus that stretch of abandoned highway. Though beware, at any moment the ground underneath may collapse. Plus there is some pretty noxious fumes emanating from the fires down below. (Also note, this village was sort of the inspiration for the movie Silent Hill.)
